TRACKER by: Gary Paulsen

John’s Grandfather has cancer so he has to hunt alone this year. He waits and waits, but cannot see a single deer. Finally he comes apon a doe in a clearing. He picks up his gun and tries to pull the trigger, but he can’t bring himself to do it. He stalks the deer through the forest for a while until he comes very close to the doe. He reaches out and touches the doe. Then he heads home.  It had no story line what so ever.It lacked excitement.  The character development was okay, but John didn’t really do anything besides walk in the woods. This book gets 2 out of 5 shields. Usually I love Gary Paulsen’s books, but this one didn’t live up to my expectations.

  1. It sounds so similar to the day when my dad and I went turkey hunting: we din’t see a single turkey and we just gave up a couple of hours later. 😦

  2. I don’t know why people hunt and kill innocent creatures anyway. I’d wondered about this book, because I have enjoyed reading some of Gary Paulsen’s books before.

I haven’t read the book yet, but I wonder if the boy feels it was unneccessary to take a life when his own grandfather was fighting to live. Maybe the boy gained respect for life. I dunno..I have to read it. Thanks for the review. And I like your blog a lot.

    • Thanks for your comments, Priya. I don’t know why people hunt and kill innocent creatures either. I’m usually a Gary Paulsen fan, but this book just wasn’t my cup of tea.
